CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team opened the 2014 season with an 18-5 loss against No. 3 North Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Fetzger Field.

The Big Green (0-1) made the most of their man-up opportunities going 2-for-3 in the contest, while the Tar Heels (3-0) scored on three of their four extra-man chances.

North Carolina jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first period. With the Tar Heels leading, 5-0, early in the second quarter, freshman Adam Philie put Dartmouth on the board. Philie took a pass from classmate Don Stephan and buried his first collegiate tally with the Big Green a man up.

Philie’s goal was the lone tally for Dartmouth in the opening half as North Carolina entered the break with an 8-1 advantage.

In the second half, the Tar Heels outscored the Green and White, 10-4.

Freshman Christian Guinchard scored Dartmouth’s second goal of the game with 8:02 remaining in the third and Stephan added his first career goal for the Green just over five minutes later. Sophomore KC Beard added an assist on Stephan’s tally.

In the fourth quarter, sophomore Jibran Ahmad scored a pair of goals for the team from the Upper Valley. In his first appearance for head coach Andrew Towers, the Larchmont, N.Y., native beat UNC backup goaltender Duncan Saunders twice.

A pair of goaltenders saw action for Dartmouth as Blair Friedensohn got the start and made 12 saves in a losing effort, while freshman Jake Landman stopped one shot in relief. On the opposite end, Kieran Burke turned aside eight shots to earn his third victory of the season.

Dartmouth was 15-for-20 on clear attempts, while North Carolina went 14-for-15.

The Big Green return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 25, traveling to Burlington to face regional rival Vermont. Dartmouth enters the contest riding a four-game winning streak versus the Catamounts.
