Abbey continues to set new highs while the Big Green Sailors are racking up wins and honors. Senior Abbey D'Agostino set a course record enroute to an individual Heptagonal Championship title while leading her squad to the team title. Sailors Matt Wefer and Avery Plough won the 73rd Schell Trophy and have qualified for the Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championship.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the Northeast Credit Union Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Northeast Credit Union Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
(Topsfield, Mass.) Sr, Cross Country
Abbey D'Agostino ran away with her second Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country title on Saturday with an impressive showing at Princeton. The 2011 champion once again returned to the top of the podium, this time joined by her whole team as the Dartmouth women claimed its first program championship since 1997. D'Agostino shattered the old Heps 6K record by 48 seconds as she crossed the finish line in 19:40.8. That 39.2-second margin of victory over the race's second-place runner was the largest in Ivy League history, breaking the mark of 34.9 that was set by Princeton’s Liz Costello in 2008. Saturday’s championship was the fifth in program history and the first since Dartmouth won four straight between 1994 and 1997. D’Agostino becomes the second Big Green woman to win two Heps titles in a career, joining Maribel Sanchez (1995-96), who would go on to coach at her alma mater and recruit D’Agostino to Hanover.
Avery Plough (Portolo Valley, Calif.), Sr., Sailing
Matt Wefer and Avery Plough were named the Coed Athletes of the Week after leading the Big Green to victory at the 73rd Schell Trophy. Wefer and Plough won two of the nine races in their heat and finished in the top-five in five others to win A-Division by five points. The duo was also tabbed as NEISA Coed Sailors of the Week after their performance in Boston last weekend. The strong finish helped Dartmouth qualify for the Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championship to be held Nov. 16-17 at the College of Charleston.
