KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Dartmouth sailors Matt Wefer and Avery Plough have been named the NEISA Coed Sailors of the Week after winning A-division at the Admiral’s Cup, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy over the weekend.
Wefer and Plough dominated their division, finishing in the top five in 12 of 15 races, and winning their division by 24 points. Their performance led the Big Green to a third place overall finish in the 15-team event, which was the most competitive event in both the conference and the country last weekend.
“Making this even more remarkable, Wefer and Plough did this in windy conditions without an ‘alternate’ crew,” Dartmouth co-head coach Justin Assad said. “Many teams put in a heavier or stronger sailor when the breeze picks up and often a smaller female is replaced with a bigger guy, but Matt and Avery stayed together for the whole event, besting many teams in the big breeze.”
The duo became the first members of the Big Green to earn weekly honors this spring.
Dartmouth returns to the water this weekend competing in four regattas throughout the Northeast.
