After more than a year of demolition, dust and debris, The Fitness Center at Dartmouth College on the upper level of Alumni Gym officially opened Wednesday to rave reviews.

"We've waited a long time for this facility," Dartmouth President James Wright told the gathering, "yet standing here now celebrating this wonderful area of space filled with incredible equipment and natural light, I'm sure we can all agree that every single moment of the wait was worth it. It's a wonderful Dartmouth story, this particular facility is."

At about 14,000 square feet, the sparkling and airy new Fitness Center is more than three times the size of the college's previous facility, and the largest centralized fitness area in the Ivy League.

It is the centerpiece of a $12 million renovation of venerable Alumni Gym, which in turn is part of a dramatic athletic department building initiative.

The Fitness Center features 64 state-of-the-art cardio fitness machines with half featuring individual TV screens and half facing the large arched windows on either end of the enormous space. On the mezzanine at the north end are free weights and workout areas for Fitness & Life Improvement Program (FLIP) classes. In a room located directly underneath the mezzanine is the spinning station. With a graceful ramp at the front of the gym and a new elevator, the entire Fitness Center is fully handicap accessible."
