HANOVER, N.H. — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today announced its Google Cloud Academic All-District Teams for baseball, and Dartmouth senior outfielder Dustin Shirley was listed among the members for District I. Shirley is the eighth Big Green seelction for the team over the past decade, but first since Jeff Keller in 2014.
A 6-5, 200-pound co-captain from Los Angeles, California, Shirley is a psychology major with a 3.75 GPA. He played in the infield (mostly second base) during each of his first three seasons at Dartmouth before shifting to the outfield in his final campaign. The move has not affected Shirley’s performance at the plate as he leads the Ivy League with 13 doubles while hitting .290 with a .344 on-base percentage and a team-best .462 slugging percentage. He also leads the team with 28 RBIs, 67 total bases and five stolen bases while clubbing four home runs and scoring 21 times.
Shirley has been particularly hot at the plate of late, hitting .357 over the last seven games with five doubles, two homers and 10 RBIs, including a career-high five driven in during a 14-3 win over Princeton this past weekend. And on April 30, he was named the Ivy League Player of the Week after going 4-for-8 in a doubleheader against Brown with a walk-off solo home run in a 2-1 victory.
For his career, Shirley has hit .273/.319/.382 with five homers, 30 doubles, nine triples, 77 runs, 80 RBIs and 22 stolen bases in 159 games, which is tied for fourth-most in Dartmouth history.
Earlier this year, Shirley was one of the 30 Senior CLASS Award candidates, all of whom excelled in community, classroom, character and competition. An All-Ivy League honorable mention second baseman as a sophomore when he hit .405 against conference pitchers, he also earned a spot on the Academic All-Ivy League Spring Team in his junior season.
Dartmouth (16-20-1, 11-6-1 Ivy) finishes its regular season with a three-game series at Harvard (20-19, 10-8 Ivy) beginning with a doubleheader on Sunday at O’Donnell Field at 11:30 a.m. The games will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network, now available on Apple TV, Roku and the ILN app for Android and Apple devices.
Notes: District I is comprised of teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont … of the 12 players on the District I team, half hailed from Ivy League schools — Brown, Cornell, Harvard (2) and Yale … a seventh Ivy Leaguer from Penn made the District II team as well … Shirley will now be placed on the ballot for Academic All-America, which will be announced in June.
