Shutouts and sweeps were the order of the weekend in Dartmouth sports. The Big Green women's soccer team wrapped up the 2017 with a 1-0 shutout over Cornell on Saturday. Freshman Erin Kawakami was a force all season, finally connecting with the back of the net for the gamewinner. Inside and on the ice, junior Daniel Warpecha scored a shorthanded goal against Brown and Yale.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Hanover Brick and Brew Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Erin Kawakami, Fr., Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., MF, Women's Soccer
Freshman midfielder Erin Kawakami of the Dartmouth women’s soccer team earned her first collegiate weekly award as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for November 6.
The Palos Verdes Estates, California native scored the only goal in Saturday’s shutout over Cornell, taking the win and also tallying her first collegiate goal. She had five shots with two on goal during the game, including the goal she scored.
Daniel Warpecha, Jr., Willow Springs, Ill., W, Men's Hockey
The Big Green capped a weekend home sweep for the first time since January 2016 thanks in large part to the play of sophomore winger Daniel Warpecha and his four-point weekend. Warpecha posted a goal and an assist in both wins against Brown and Yale with both goals coming shorthanded, an impressive feat given that Dartmouth had just one shorthanded goal all of the 2016-17 season. It marked his first time notching multiple-point efforts in back-to-back games since joining the team last year. He was named the ECAC Athlete of the week for his efforts.
