ITHACA, N.Y. — Sophomore Will Bednarz finished the opening two rounds of the Cornell Invitational at two-under par, while classmate Riley Griffin ended the day at even par to boost the Big Green to a four-over 572, just a single stroke behind Yale in the 16-team field. Temple is right on the Big Green’s heels, however, with a 573 (+5), while host Cornell and Drexel are both nine-over par on the par-71, 6,904-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Ithaca.

Bednarz is tied for second on the leaderboard with five others, trailing Delaware’s Kieran Purcell by three strokes. Griffin, meanwhile, is tied for eighth with five others as well, thanks to carding a two-under 69 during his second round of play. That matched Bednarz’s opening round for the low Big Green score on the day.

Consistency was the name of the game for Bednarz who produced 24 pars and seven birdies while suffering just five bogeys throughout the two rounds. Griffin was a bit more volatile, but quickly recovered his two double bogeys within the first four holes of the day with four birdies and just two bogeys over the rest of his first round before sinking five birdies — giving him nine on the day to tie for the most — and just three bogeys to shoot a 69 (-2) during his second 18.

Freshman James Turner matched Bednarz’ seven birdies while posting a 73 in each round to finish the day in a tie for 26th with a four-over 146. Senior captain Ian Kelsey and freshman Jason Liu each contributed a score to the Dartmouth cause with Kelsey providing a one-over 72 during his first tour through the course and Liu matching that score in the second round.

The Big Green also had junior John Lazor competing as an individual, carding a 72-76—148 (+6) to tie with Liu for 34th.

The third and final round will tee off on Sunday morning at 8 a.m., though the Dartmouth five won’t get started until 9:30 a.m.
