HANOVER, N.H. – It was announced Monday afternoon that Dartmouth senior Kristen Giovanniello and sophomore Jaclyn Leto were selected as members of the 2014 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Northeast Region Second Team.
For Giovanniello, this marks her second time as a member of the second team and the third appearance overall on the All-Northeast Region announcement. She was named a second-team player as a sophomore in 2012, while earning first-team distinction in 2011.
Leto makes her first career appearance on the all-region list after a strong sophomore season in 2014. She led the team in goals (34), while second in points (41) and third in assists (8), posting career highs nearly across the board as she was arguably the most versatile player all season for Dartmouth.
The Chatham, New Jersey, native had multi-goal efforts on nine occasions this season with three games of at least four tallies and two five-point efforts. Leto’s 59 shots on goal were the most by any player in the Green and White this spring.
In addition to her play in the offensive end, Leto was also a valuable asset in several areas of the field. She was second on the team in draw controls (30) and fourth in both ground balls (14) and caused turnovers (6). All of these facets of her game combined to earn Leto a spot on the All-Ivy League First Team as announced in late April.
Like Leto, Giovanniello earned All-Ivy honors, as she was a second-team selection. The four-year starter from Old Brookville, New York, cemented her place as one of the best goalkeepers in Dartmouth women’s lacrosse history with another tremendous effort this past season.
Giovanniello became just the third goalkeeper in the program’s four-plus decades to pass the 500-save mark, finishing up with 529. The 16 shots stopped in her final game in a Big Green uniform at Harvard helped that total as it was just one shy of her career high. The 9-8 win under the lights of the Crimson’s home stadium was also the 40th of her career (40-26), once again becoming just the third goalkeeper in program history to reach the milestone victory figure.
In her final collegiate spring, Giovanniello was the anchor of Dartmouth’s defense, posting seven games of double-digit saves (UConn, Yale, Albany, Florida, Columbia, Penn, Harvard). Her two Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors during the course of the season gave her eight for her career, the second-most by any player in conference history, trailing only the nine won by former Big Green goalkeeper Devon Wills ’06.
The IWLCA has honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with a selection on one of the All-Regional teams for 2014. These student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Monday May 19. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
