PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Dartmouth softball team outscored Brown, 11-1, in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green took the opener, 7-1 and closed out the nightcap, 4-0.
Junior Kristen Rumley and sophomore Morgan McCalmon tossed a pair of complete games. Sophomore Kelsey Miller and freshmen Chloe Madill and Karen Chaw belted solo home runs, with back-to-back shots in the sixth frame of game two. Senior Kara Curosh added three RBI in game one and sophomore Katie McEachern drove in the game-winning run in the fifth of the finale.
The Big Green increased their Ivy winning streak to 14 games and are now 25-13 overall.
Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead with a run in the opening frame. Senior Kara Curosh led off with a single to left field and then advanced to second on a five-pitch walk issued to Rumley. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and then Curosh scored on a misplayed fly ball to Brown left fielder Danielle Palms by McEachern.
Brown tied the game at one-all in the second with a solo home run by Kelsey Williams. After allowing the home run, Rumley shutdown the Bears the rest of the way and finished with nine strikeouts for her league-leading 14th win of the season.
Dartmouth scored six times in the final two innings, with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. Madill blasted a homer to right field to lead off the frame and then McCalmon singled through the right side with the bases loaded.
In the seventh, the Big Green once again loaded the bases with three singles by sophomore Kelsey Miller, Madill and junior Megan Averitt. Curosh cleared the bases with a double to right center to give the Green and White a five-run lead, 6-1. McEachern then did her part during the rally with an RBI double to right.
Brown’s starter Leah Nakashima was dealt the loss and is now 1-10 on the season. Nakashima allowed three runs on 10 hits. Gina Chieffallo finished the game and allowed four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.
In the nightcap, McCalmon (8-3) struck out a career-best 11 batters and faced three batters over the minimum. The game remained scoreless until the Big Green scored in the fifth. With two outs and runners at first and second, Dartmouth took the lead with an RBI single to center field by McEachern that plated Averitt.
In the sixth, Dartmouth hit back-to-back homers to right field to increase the lead by three. With one out, Chaw sent an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall and on the next pitch, Miller sent her shot to the same location. The Big Green added an insurance run in the final stanza as the pitcher McCalmon helped her cause with an RBI single through the left side.
Jessica Cherness also pitched a complete game for the Bears, but allowed four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.
Dartmouth and Brown will complete the four-game set with an Easter Sunday doubleheader at 12:30 p.m.
