SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. – The Dartmouth softball team completed the Gaucho Classic II with a pair of wins over Monmouth, 5-1, and host UC Santa Barbara, 9-2, on Sunday afternoon at Campus Diamond.

The Big Green outscored its opposition, 14-3 in the two contests and struck out 12 batters. Sophomore Katie McEachern and freshmen Maddie Damore and Chloe Madill led the Big Green with three RBI each on the day. McEachern and classmate Kelsey Miller belted home runs in the Monmouth game, while the rookies had all six RBI against the Gauchos.

In the Monmouth game, Dartmouth used three pitchers that dominated the circle. Sophomore Morgan McCalmon started the game and pitched three innings while allowing just one hit with five strikeouts. Classmate Alex Jarvis (1-0) relieved McCalmon in the fourth and was credited with the win. Freshman Ashley Sissel threw the final two frames to preserve the win.

McEachern led-off the second stanza with a solo home run down the left field line to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead. The Big Green added two more runs in the next inning on a fielder’s choice RBI by junior Megan Averitt and then a ground out RBI by Madill. The Big Green began the third inning just like the second with a solo home run by Miller. Holding a 4-0 lead, Monmouth scored its only run in the fourth, but the Big Green regained the four-run edge off an RBI single by McEachern in the fifth.

In the final game of the weekend, junior Kristen Rumley (4-4) picked up her fourth win of the season with a great five-inning performance. Rumley allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. McCalmon finished the contest with a near perfect two innings of service, allowing just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.

Dartmouth trailed 1-0 after the first frame, but added two runs in the second as Rumley helped out with an RBI double to left center and then an RBI double by Damore. UC Santa Barbara tied the contest at two in the bottom of the inning. Neither side scored in the next two stanzas until Dartmouth put three runs on the board in the fifth, followed by four insurance markers in the sixth.

Freshman Alyssa Jorgensen sent a two RBI single up the middle to score Damore who walked to begin the inning and Averitt who singled through the left side. Dartmouth’s third run of the inning came via a triple into right field by McEachern that scored Jorgensen.

In the sixth, the Big Green tacked on four more runs to take a seven-run advantage. Damore completed her three run performance with a two RBI single to left field. Jorgensen and Kara Curosh finished the run support for the Big Green with a groundout and a single through the left side.

The Big Green finished the weekend 4-1 and are now 6-8 on the season.

Dartmouth will travel to San Diego to take on the Toreros on Wednesday, followed by a pair of games on Thursday at UC Riverside against the Highlanders and Monmouth.
