PHILADELPHIA, PA – Senior Nicola Zimmer and sophomore Lakin Roland finished in double figures, but the defensive minded Penn Quakers defeated the Dartmouth women’s basketball team 71-53 Friday evening at The Palestra.

Zimmer and Roland led the Green with 10 points each, with Roland topping the team with seven caroms and seven assists. Junior Milica Toskovic and freshman Fanni Szabo contributed eight points, respectively, even though Szabo was held scoreless at the break.

On the offensive end, Dartmouth shot 38 percent from the field and converted on eight trifectas, but only got to the line twice.  Penn was efficient on all ends, shooting 41 percent from the field with seven three-pointer, nine steals and 13 forced turnovers.

Early in the first both sides traded baskets with four lead changes. Dartmouth adapted to an exterior offensive set midway through due to a solid 2-3 zone by the Quakers to erase the inside option for the Green. Dartmouth led 8-5 off a jumper by Schmitt, but Penn used a 13-0 run to take a 20-8 advantage with 8:42 remaining.

Zimmer broke the run with her second triple of the period and then a jumper by Toskovic cut the deficit to nine. The hosts regained a double-digit lead on a layup by Kara Bonenberger. The Quakers finished the half on a 9-4 run and took a 17-point edge on a layup by Baron with 1:16 left.

The Quaker stymied the Big Green offense, holding the visitors to 26.7 percent from the floor, while Penn shot 42 percent.

In the second half, Dartmouth made its first five shots, but the Quakers continued to hold a sizeable lead and took a 25-point advantage with 5:51 left. Roland and Szabo scored all of their 18 combined points in the final stanza and out rebounded the Quakers 17-15.

Penn finished the game with a slight edge on the boards, 37-35, with Sydney Stipanovich finishing with a double-double – 12 points and 12 rebounds. Alyssa Baron led the way for the Quakers with 20 points and got double figure contributions from Kathleen Roche and Bonenberger.

Dartmouth will meet Princeton Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
