ALBANY, N.Y. – It was announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office that Dartmouth sophomore Charles Grant had been named the ECAC Hockey Men’s Goaltender of the Week.

Grant picked up his first career weekly accolade thanks to a 22-save performance Saturday night at Thompson Arena against Harvard, helping the Big Green to a 2-1 victory over their longtime Ivy League and ECAC Hockey rival.

The win was the first of the season for Dartmouth and was the result of timely scoring and the stellar play of Grant in goal. Allowing just one tally to Harvard’s Jimmy Vesey midway through the second period, the Berwick, Nova Scotia, native would clamp down the rest of the way, keeping the visitors off the scoreboard and allowing Eric Neiley the opportunity to score the late-game winner.

Grant was also tested early, stopping a Brian Hart breakaway in the opening minutes to keep it scoreless in the first period. The second-year goaltender would get better as the game went along, stopping 17 shots in the final two frames, including nine in the third to earn the ‘W’.

The Big Green’s starter was also tasked with keeping the Crimson’s power play in check all night. Harvard finished the evening 0-for-6 with the man-advantage thanks to key saves from Grant and aggressive penalty killing from the players in front of him.

For Dartmouth, the accolade is the first individual honor of the season. St. Lawrence's Greg Carey was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week, while Cornell's Mitch Gillam was named the week's top rookie.

The Big Green will head back out on the road this weekend as they take on defending NCAA National Champion Yale Friday night in New Haven, before venturing north on I-95 to Providence to take on Brown Saturday. Both games are set for 7 p.m.
