NEW YORK – The Dartmouth women's volleyball team ended the 2013 season on a high note, topping Columbia, 3-0, in Ivy League action on Saturday from Levien Gymnasium. The Big Green (11-15, 4-10 Ivy) topped the Lions, (6-17, 4-10 Ivy) 25-19, 25-22, 25-19.

The win was the first sweep in conference play for Dartmouth since November of 2011 versus Brown. Of the Green and White’s four league victories, Saturday’s was the first to not be decided in five sets.

In the opening set, the Ancient Eight rivals traded the first 30 points. Dartmouth finished strong, ending on a 10-4 run to take a 1-0 lead. Down the stretch, the Big Green pulled away thanks to a quartet of Emily Astarita kills.

In the second set, the Lions jumped to a 17-11 lead. Dartmouth battled back to knot the game at 19, scoring eight of the next 10 points. During the run, Paige Caridi and Kaira Lujan each added two kills. Astarita played the role of closer once again for the Big Green, tallying the final two kills for Dartmouth to give the team from the Upper Valley a commanding 2-0 advantage.

In the third set, the Ivy foes once again traded the first ten points. With the score tied at five, Dartmouth went on a 9-2 run to take a 14-7 lead. The Green and White held their lead as the Lions never pulled within closer then four.

Offensively, Dartmouth produced 53 kills as a team led by Astarita with a match-best 15 and Caridi with 14. Astarita finished the year with arguably her strongest performance of the season, registering an attack percentage of .536. Freshman Stacey Benton continued her strong play, dishing out 47 assists.

The contest marked the final time senior Elisa Scudder will suit up for the Big Green. Scudder leaves Hanover holding several program records, including the top-two single season block marks and the career blocks total. The Ashburn, Va., native has 319 career blocks and 96 in 2013.
