Men's golf is wrapping up the fall season while volleyball is heading into the stretch run. Joey Maziar and Emily Astarita are key contributors to their team's success. Freshman Astarita had 15 kills in a road win over Princeton, the first in team history. Maziar helped the Big Green men's golf team round out the 2013 fall with a 5th place showing in Ivy League Match Play.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the Northeast Credit Union Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Northeast Credit Union Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
(Atlanta, Ga.), Sr., Men's Golf
Senior captain Joey Maziar helped the Big Green finish fifth at last weekends Ivy League Match Play. Maziar won his first match at the tournament against Columbia and played well in the teams other two. The event capped Dartmouth's fall season as the team now has a layover during the winter months. Maziar opened the 2013-14 campaign with his best collegiate finish, tying for low individual medalist honors at the Bucknell Invite. His three-round total of 216 (73-71-72) helped the Green open the year with a team triumph as well.
(Setauket, N.Y.), Fr., OPP, Volleyball
The outside hitter continued her strong play in Ivy League action last weekend, producing a team-high 29 kills as Dartmouth went 1-1. On Friday, Astarita helped the Big Green make history registering a team-best 15 kills in a 3-2 win at Princeton. The victory marked the first time in program history that the Green and White topped the Tigers on the road. The Setauket, N.Y., native ended the week with 14 kills in a 3-1 loss at Penn. She led the team in kills in each of the matches last weekend and looks to help the team end a two-match losing streak versus Harvard this week.
