Big Green Score Sixth Place Finish at The Macdonald Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Dartmouth men’s golf team shot a team total of 291 in round three of the Macdonald Cup on Sunday to finish in sixth place. The Big Green’s three-round total of 863 (283-289-291) left them two strokes behind fifth place Hartford and four shots back of fourth place Rhode Island.

The 2013 Macdonald Cup boasted a field of 14 teams and was contested at the par-70, 6,789 yard Yale Golf Course.

Illinois ran away from the competition with a tournament total of 807 to score a 25-stroke win over the host Bulldogs. St. Edward’s came in third while URI and Hartford rounded out the top five.

Brian Campbell of Illinois earned low individual medalist honors as he shot 13-under par for the event.

The low scorer for the Big Green was Jeffrey Lang at even par for 54 holes. After an opening round 68, Lang followed with back-to-back 71’s. Lang had a team-high 10 birdies and ended the tournament in a three-way tie for 11th.

As a team, Dartmouth had 38 birdies. The Big Green were fourth best in the field, playing the par 4’s at 18-over par (4.10 stroke average).

Charles Cai carded a final round 71 to finish the event with a three-round total of 214 (71-72-71). Cai ended the Macdonald Cup at four-over par and in a three-way tie for 18th.

Sean Fahey finished one shot behind Cai’s pace, shooting a 74 on day two. Fahey’s three round score of 215 was good enough for a share of 21st.

Joey Maziar and Charlie Edler rounded out the field for the Big Green. Maziar fired a 75 in the final round to end in a five-way tie for 51st while Edler’s 78 left him in a tie for 59th.

Dartmouth returns to the links next weekend, Oct. 12-13, traveling to Philadelphia to compete in the Temple Invitational.
