HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth track & field programs handed out team awards at the annual banquet Wednesday held at the Dartmouth Outing Club. Coaches, support staff and student-athletes were on hand as part of the end-of-year celebration.
Several awards and certificates were handed out over the course of the evening to members of both the men’s and women’s teams for performances during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
The Everett L. Palmer Track Prize is given annually to the athlete who contributed most to the track program during the year as determined by the coaching staff. This year, the award was given to two recipients as seniors Connor Reilly and Brett Gilson shared the honor.
For Reilly and D’Agostino, it marked the second consecutive year that each received the accolades.
The Nathan D. Bugbee 1925 Memorial Track Prize is presented each year to one individual on each of the men's and women's track squads who, according to fellow team members, best exemplifies the characteristics of good team sportsmanship, spirit, camaraderie, and overall dedication to the sport and who demonstrates respect for team members, opponents and officials. Seniors Katie Sullivan and Gilson were tabbed with this year’s honor.
In a similar light, Henry Sterling was presented with the Leon E. Lovejoy Track Prize, which is given each season to the member of the team who, in the opinion of the DCAD and the coaches, has done the most in sportsmanship and competition to uphold the interest of Dartmouth College.
Five individuals received the Herb Chase Track Award, presented to the members of the team who, in the opinion of the coaching staff, has made the greatest improvement in his or her event through hard work, self-discipline and enthusiasm for the sport. Those five student-athletes were Thomas Servino and Will Geoghegan of the men’s team and Lauren Ready, Alex Kurkul and Caroline Buck of the women’s squad.
Another duo split an award during the ceremony as head coach Barry Harwick presented both Phil Royer and Jon Gault with the Paul S. Harmon '13 Trophy. The honor is given to that member of the senior class who is a distance or cross country runner and who, in the opinion of the track coach and Director of Athletics, has shown the greatest improvement in track athletics during his college career.
The Carl Wallin Coach's Award was given to four individuals who demonstrated to the coaching staff the intangibles required to excel in his or her event as well as amongst teammates, coaches and officials. Receiving this honor were BB Jones and Josh Cyphers on the men’s side with Karla Verkouw and Ali Procopio representing the women’s team.
In addition to awards being presented, the coaching staff also announced the captains for next year’s teams. The women will see the return of the three current captains for a second go-around as juniors Krumpoch, Arianna Vailas and Janae Duchack were all selected by their peers to once again lead the team in 2013-14.
The men saw three new student-athletes tabbed as leaders with Sterling, Cyphers and Servino all voted into the role of captains by the other members of the team.
