HANOVER, N.H. – The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced its annual all-region teams Tuesday afternoon with three Dartmouth players earning All-Northeast honors.
Already selected to the All-Ivy League First Team and the Ivy League All-Tournament Team, Bowers and Bennett continue to earn some of the highest honors from head coaches from across the area. Additionally, Johnson was a Second-Team All-Ivy League player and another of the Big Green’s four recipients of all-tournament honors this past weekend.
In receiving this regional recognition, all three student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion as IWLCA All-Americans.
Bowers is recording points at a torrid pace this season for the Green as she currently leads the team in goals (48), assists (15) and points (63). The Old Greenwich, Conn., native posted 10 points and eight goals this past weekend in Philadelphia, establishing Ivy League Tournament records in both categories. Bowers’ point total this spring ranks as the ninth-best in program history, while her 48 goals are 10th.
Bennett has been the most consistent player across the board in 2013. A standout in the midfield, the Darien, Conn., native has also proven herself as one of the toughest defenders not only in the Northeast, but in the entire nation. Bennett leads the team in both draw controls (52) and caused turnovers (21) this year, demonstrating her immense importance in every area of the field. Even while proving her worth in the midfield and in the defensive end, Bennett has registered 21 points to tie for fourth on the team in total scoring as she has 13 goals and eight assists.
Johnson has routinely been tasked with marking up against the opposition’s top offensive player throughout the 2013 campaign. A stellar one-on-one defender, the Hingham, Mass., native has set new career highs in caused turnovers (20) and ground balls (35) during her senior spring. In addition to her outstanding play in Dartmouth’s defensive zone, Johnson has also stepped up her offensive contributions this year as her five goals, five assists and 10 points are all new career-best marks.
Bowers, Bennett, Johnson and the rest of the Big Green are back in action this weekend as they travel to Syracuse to take on Boston College in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament Friday at 4 p.m. The winner of that match-up will move on to the second round to play No. 4 Syracuse on Sunday, May 12 at 3 p.m.
The IWLCA has honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with a selection on one of the All-Regional teams for 2013. These athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on May 17. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on May 25, 2013 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
