WORCESTER, MASS. – The Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team wrapped up its non-conference slate on Tuesday afternoon as a five goal, fourth quarter rally fell short in an 11-10 loss to Holy Cross at Holy Cross Field.

The Big Green (3-10, 1-4 Ivy league) lost to the Crusaders (7-8, 2-4 Patriot League) for just the second time in the 32 game series history. With the loss, the Green and White end the 2013 season without a road win as the squad lost all seven of their games outside of Hanover.

Holy Cross got off to a quick start scoring a trio of goals in the first quarter to lead 3-1 after the opening 15 minutes. Chris Costabile scored his team leading 20th goal of the year to put the Big Green on the board.

In the second quarter each team netted a pair of goals as the Crusaders took a 5-3 advantage into halftime. Senior JP Garry tallied his second marker of the season for the Big Green and junior Brendan Rotanz scored the first of his three goals to cap the scoring late in the quarter.

Rotanz became the fifth member of the Big Green to register a hat trick this season. The Westport, Conn., native is the first to do so against an unranked opponent.

Dartmouth opened the second half with two unanswered goals as sophomore Phil Hession scored and dished out an assist to Costabile. With the game tied at five and just over eight minutes remaining in the third Holy Cross ended the quarter with five consecutive goals to take a 10-5 edge heading into the final 15 minutes.

The Big Green opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals as Adam Fishman scored a pair sandwiched around a Nikki Dysenchuk marker. James Kennedy thwarted the rally for Holy Cross as he stretched the lead back to three with his second goal of the game.

Down the stretch Rotanz added two more goals over the final 2:25, but it was not enough as the Crusaders held on for the victory.

After scoring just two goals last time out, head coach Andrew Towers’ offense exploded for 10 goals. Fishman, Costabile and Rotanz all had multi-goal games for the Dartmouth.

Bernie Susskind (3-10) made 11 saves in a losing effort for the Big Green, while Michael Ortlieb (4-6) turned aside 14 shots to earn his fourth career victory.

Dartmouth wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 27, as it squares off with Brown in Ivy League action at Scully-Fahey Field at 6 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on Fox College Sports and the nine members of the class of 2013 will also be honored prior to the contest.
