FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Dartmouth softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference twinbill at Sacred Heart on Tuesday (March 26) afternoon. The Big Green fell 6-3 in the first game and dropped the nightcap in heartbreaking fashion, 7-6, in the eighth inning.

Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas) was 2-of-3 from the plate against the Pioneers and contributed three runs. Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) and Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) also added three runs over the course of the doubleheader.

In the nightcap, Rachel Hein (Olathe, Kan.) and Alex Jarvis (Tustin, Calif.) saw time in the circle. Hein threw 4.1 innings of work and scattered four hits while allowing just two runs. Jarvis came in in relief in allowing five runs on four hits.

Rumley started the opener and pitched four innings and threw five strikeouts and allowing three runs on four hits Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) pitched 2.0 innings of relief.

The second game was a back-and forth affair for Dartmouth (10-12) and it was the visitors that opened the scoring in the second inning.  Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) belted a single to center field and was brought home on an RBI double from Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) McEachern added a second run with a Pioneer error.

Sacred Heart put a run on the board in the fourth inning with a home run from Annie Dreher cutting Dartmouth’s lead to just one run. The Pioneers tied the game in the sixth with a RBI double from Justin Sidthrop, setting the scene for a crazy eighth inning.

Utilizing the international tiebreaker rule, which places a runner on second base, the Big Green scored four runs on four hits in the eighth inning. McEachern, who has had the hot bat as of late, doubled which scored Megan Averitt (Alameda, Calif.) to open the scoring. Dartmouth used singles from Hubert, Kathy Dzienkowski (Austin, Texas) and Rumley to put three more runs on the board, giving the Big Green a 6-2 lead.

The host Pioneers used their home field advantage and with a leadoff single from Jade Bowins, and a three-run home run from Annie Dreher, her third of the afternoon and second three-bagger, the Pioneers cut the lead to 5-6 with no outs. Sacred Heart sealed the game with a RBI double from Kacie Wentwoth, sending the Big Green to their second extra inning loss in the last three games.

Dartmouth struck first in game one. With a one out in the second inning, Miller drilled a double and was sent around the bases with a double from Rumley.

Shortstop, Curosh, added to the tally with a home run, putting the Big Green ahead, 2-0. Dartmouth had a chance to extend its lead with a single from Hubert followed by a McEachern walk. The bases were loaded when Miller was walked but Hubert was out at the plate to end the inning.

The host Pioneers got things going in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back singles to open the inning gave Sacred Heart two base runners, which they took advantage of with a three-run home run from Annie Dreher to shift the momentum to the home squad.

Sacred Heart blew the game open in the fifth inning after putting two runners on with base hits from Jenn Robillard and Nicole Sidor. Another three-run home run from Justine Sibthorp sent them around the bases and put the Big Green up, 6-2.

Dartmouth got one back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Miller knocked in a single, her second hit of the contest, and was driven home on a double from Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.). The Big Green kept the Pioneers off the board in the sixth and were able to get two runners on in the seventh courtesy of a triple from Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and a McEachern walk but unfortunately that was as close as the Big Green would get as a strikeout ending the game.

Dartmouth opens Ivy League action on Friday (March 29) when it travels to Columbia for a twinbill. First pitch between the Lions and Big Green is at 2 p.m.  The Big Green concludes the weekend at Penn on Saturday (March 30).  Game one starts at 4 p.m.
