ITACHA, N.Y. - The Dartmouth women's basketball team cut the lead to one possession midway though the second half, but that was as close as the Big Green would get in a 60-48 road loss to Cornell on Friday (March 8).

Abbey Schmitt (Winnetka, Ill.) and Nicola Zimmer (Chevy Chase, Md.) led the Dartmouth (6-21, 4-9 Ivy League) offense with 11 points each, while Tia Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) had a team-best seven rebounds.

The Big Green had a tough night from the floor, shooting 35.0 percent (21-of-60), but made up for it on the glass grabbing 42 rebounds, to just 34 from Cornell (13-14, 7-8 Ivy League).

Dartmouth's post players had a great night, scoring 26 points in the paint. Dawson, who had eight points, teamed with Schmitt to form a formidable post presence.

The Big Green came out in the second half and were able to cut the lead to four points courtesy of a 10-2 run to open the half, highlighted by a triple from Zimmer to cut the Big Red lead to 34-30, at the 16:22 mark.

Cornell used seven points from Taylor Flynn to extend its lead back to double figures, 41-30 at the 14:54 mark, but Dartmouth would not go away and responded with a 9-2 run to cut the lead all the way down to two points, 43-41, midway through the half.

With a six-point lead, 49-43, Cornell closed the game with an 11-5 burst to earn the victory and the season sweep.

Offense was hard to come by for both teams early in the contest and the game was just a one-point game, 6-5, at the first media timeout. The Big Red came out hot after the timeout and used a 6-2 burst to pull ahead, 12-7 early.

The Big Green went to the rim to get themselves back in the game and with eight unanswered points, seven from post players Dawson and Lakin Roland (Jeffersonville, Ind.), took their first lead of the game, 13-12, at the 11:06 mark.

Despite taking the lead, Dartmouth went cold from the floor for a span of eight minutes and Cornell capitalized and ran out to a 26-15 lead, utilizing a 14-2 run midway though the half. The Big Green were able to cut back into the lead with five points in the final 3:18 of the half to cut it to single digits, 29-20, at halftime.

The Big Green close out the 2012-13 season on Saturday (March 9) when they travel to Columbia. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at Columbia's Leiven Gym.
