HANOVER, N.H. - Behind a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds from rookie Lakin Roland (Jeffersonville, Ind.), the Dartmouth women's basketball team pushed Princeton to the wire, but dropped a tightly contested 68-60 contest on Saturday (March 2) night.
The final three minutes of action saw Dartmouth (6-19, 4-7 Ivy League) battle back from a seven-point deficit to cut it to four points with 47 seconds left, but the Tigers were a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the victory.
Roland, who became the first Dartmouth player to score 20 points this season, led the way. Her 20 points and 12 rebounds marked her first collegiate double-double. Nicola Zimmer (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Abbey Schmitt (Winnetka, Ill.) were also in double figures while Kamala Thompson (Selden, N.Y.) reached double-figure rebounds with 11 boards.
Princeton (19-6, 10-1 Ivy League) scored the first basket of the second half, but Dartmouth made a statement on the defensive end with big offensive rebounds leading to points as they extended their lead to 46-39 following the first media timeout of the half.
Princeton clawed back in the game and cut the lead to two-points, 46-44, at the 12:36 mark. With a 8-2 run the Tigers pulled ahead 52-48 and from that point never trailed. Dartmouth cut it to four points three times in the final 3:14, but that was as close as the score would get.
The Big Green jumped out to a 12-8 lead behind a strong start from post players Tia Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Roland The pair combined for Dartmouth's first four points while Zimmer and Thompson had two early three-pointers.
The Big Green held a 18-16 at the 12:12 mark and used a 4-0 spurt to extend its lead to 22-17 with 8:49 left on the clock. The Tigers hit three free throws to cut Dartmouth's lead to one possession, 22-20, at the 7:58 mark, but the Big Green countered with a 6-2 run highlighted by back-to-back jumpers from Zimmer to extend the lead to six points - the largest Dartmouth lead of the half.
The teams traded buckets over the final 2:25 of the half, but Dartmouth took a 36-33 lead into the break courtesy of a layup from Kaitana Martinez (Hailey, Idaho) with 16 seconds left on the clock.
Coming off the bench for the first time this season, Schmitt provided a spark and had eight first half points while Roland, in her first career start, has 10 points and eight rebounds, en route to her first career double-double.
The tail of the first half was turnovers and rebounds. The Big Green were able to force Princeton into seven turnovers, which led to 11 Dartmouth points. The bench was also key as they contributed 12 first half points, compared to just a pair for the Princeton reserves.
Dartmouth will close out the 2012-13 home slate when they take on Cornell in a game postponed from Feb. 10 on Tuesday (March 5). Tipoff will be at 6 p.m. at Leede Arena.
