Zupan Wins Two Events in Second Day Action at Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Nejc Zupan (Kanmik, Slovenia) picked up two more wins in the 400 IM and the 100 breaststroke, earning NCAA B times in both events, to lead the Dartmouth swimming and diving programs ins second day action at the Brown Invitational.

Zupan, who won the 400 IM at the 2012 Ivy League Championship, claimed the event with a time of 3:50.49 and took the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.42. Zupan's time in the 100 breaststroke is a new school record. With today's two wins, Zupan has claimed three event titles at the Brown Invitational.

The Big Green put together another solid day of action in the pool. Rebecca Butler (Orange, N.J.) led the women's squad with a sixth-place finish in the 400 IM while teammate Emily Holt (Louisville, Ky.) won the B Final in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.36 and was joined in the event by teammates Kendall Farnham (Severna Park, Md.), Danielle Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) and Valerie Orellana (Arleta, Calif.).

On the men's side Will Derdeyn (St. Louis, Mo.) and Andrew North (Omaha, Neb.) also swam in the final of the 100 butterfly. Derdeyn took fourth with a time of 49.17, while North placed fifth (49.45).

In the 200 freestyle events freshmen Olivia Samson (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Charlotte Kamai (Corte Madera, Calif.) led the women. Samson took runner-up honors in the B Final with a time of 1:51.49, while Kamai was right on her heels in third place with a time of 1:52.07.  For the men, Jay Margherio (New Caanan, Conn.) won the B Final with a time of 1:40.28 and Ian Woon (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was third in the C Final with a time of 1:41.98).

Dartmouth had an excellent showing in the backstroke events for both squads. Holt and classmate Kendese Nangle (Kingston, Jamaica) led the women, both swimming in the A Final. Holt placed fourth with a time of 56.46 while Nangle was eighth with a time of 57.02. James Verhagen (Randberg, South Africa) led all Big Green swimmers earning runner-up honors with a time of 48.76.

In the relays, the women's quartet of Samson, Kamai, Laura Hayes (Reno, Nev.) and Kerr placed third in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:29.54 while the men's team placed fifth (6:44.75) and sixth (6:46.00).  The men's team took runner-up honors in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:29.38.

At the end of two days of competition, the Dartmouth women are in fourth place with a score of 396, trailing Ivy League foes, Princeton, Yale and Brown and the men are sitting in second place with a score of 548 behind Princeton.
