HANOVER, N.H. — A four-time Ivy League Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week a year ago, sophomore Gabas Maldunas is now all grown up. The 6-9 forward was named the league’s co-Player of the Week after leading Dartmouth to a 67-54 victory in its season opener on Saturday night. Sharing the award with Maldunas was Princeton’s Will Barrett, who scored 20 points and snared nine rebounds in a 57-53 win over Buffalo.
College Sports Madness also selected as its sole Player of the Week in the Ivy League.
Maldunas was a force at both ends of the court, recording his fifth career double-double with a career-best 25 points and 10 rebounds, while swatting four shots and swiping three steals. He was 10-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the foul line, scoring 17 of his 25 points in the second half when the Big Green pulled away from Maine after leading at the break by two.
The last Dartmouth player to earn this award was Alex Barnett ’09 on Feb. 23, 2009 after leading the Big Green to historical road wins at Penn and Princeton. Maldunas is also the first Big Green player to convert 10 or more field goals in a game since Barnett (at Cornell, Feb. 14, 2009), and the first underclassman to tally 25 or more points in a game at Leede Arena since Leon Pattman ’07 tallied 29 in consecutive games as a freshman against Vermont and Hartford.
Dartmouth will play the second of three straight home games — the first time in 34 years the Big Green have started a season with three home games — when it hosts cross-state rival New Hampshire on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Fans can watch the game by subscribing to Big Green Insider on the official website of Dartmouth athletics, DartmouthSports.com, with Dave Collins calling all of the action.
