WEDNESDAY'S GAME
The Big Green travels to Providence for a midweek contest
with the non-conference Friars on Wednesday afternoon. Coming off a 2-0 shutout
of Penn on Saturday, Dartmouth has put together a four-game win streak to move
over .500 at 5-4 overall this season.
SCOUTING THE FRIARS
Providence plays host to the suddenly-surging Big Green
posting an identical 5-4 overall mark so far in 2012. However, the route to
that record has been very different. The team opened the year losers of two
straight overtime games, which was then followed by five consecutive victories.
That streak was halted by No. 22 Boston College, 3-2, on Sept. 23 before the team
dropped a 4-2 road contest to UConn less than a week later. Henni Tietze and
Steph Guglielmo share the team lead with five goals and 14 points apiece.
Caitlin Malone and Kaleigh Fitzpatrick are the leaders in assists as each has
dished out six helpers this season. Kathi Weidman has played the majority of
time in goal, posting a 4-2 record and a goals-against average of 2.18.
KEEP ROLLIN'
With the victory over Penn, Dartmouth pushed its win streak
to four games. The Big Green have now put together streaks of at least four
wins in four straight seasons. The common factor? Bryant. The Bulldogs have
been one of those Dartmouth victories in each of the four streaks.
CLEAN SHEET
Just six days after earning her first collegiate win,
sophomore goalkeeper Ellen Meyer (Prospect, Ky.) crossed another milestone off
her 'to-do list', pitching a shutout against the Quakers. The second-year
goalkeeper stopped all four shots that managed to find their way through a
stingy Big Green defense and on net to earn the team's first shutout of the
season and the first since a 1-0 win at Harvard Oct. 29, 2011.
LATE WINNER
Despite dominating the stat sheet in the first half,
Dartmouth was unable to get anything on the scoreboard. A scoreless 35 minutes
was all the team needed to refocus and come out strong in the second half as
sophomore Ali Savage (Orange, New South Wales, Australia) fired a shot that
found the top corner of the net just 51 seconds in for the eventual game
winner. After scoring 12 goals as a rookie in 16 games last fall, the
game-winning tally on Saturday was just the second of the 2012 season for
Savage.
INSURANCE
After Savage's goal stood as the lone marker of the game for
roughly 24 minutes, senior co-captain Maya Herm (Bethesda, Md.) added to the
home team's lead by blasting another shot by the Quakers' keeper, echoing off
the back board for the 2-0 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining.
LAST TIME VS.
PROVIDENCE
These two teams last met on Oct. 10, 2011 in Hanover with
the Big Green coming from behind to earn the 3-1 win. The Friars took a 1-0
lead 21 minutes into the game before the home team was able to tie it just
before halftime. Savage's ninth goal of the season 12:45 into the second proved
to be the winner and Sam Anderson's (Wilton, Conn.) tally as time expired put
the final exclamation point on the two-goal victory, evening the all-time
series at four games apiece.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Big Green's season of tests reaches its peak on Sunday
afternoon. The next game following Wednesday's tilt in Providence pits
Dartmouth against the No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
The non-conference, neutral-site battle will be the third time this season that
Dartmouth will take on a team ranked nationally in the top three by the NFHCA
poll (No. 3 Maryland, No. 2 Princeton).
