SATURDAY'S GAME
The Dartmouth field hockey team will
return to the turf this weekend with a home game Saturday against Ivy League
opponent Penn. The Big Green are coming off a 3-0 week that pulled its record
back to .500 at 4-4 overall this season. The victories came at home against
Bryant and Brown, before a road contest on Sunday saw the team dominate Holy
Cross, 8-1, to round out the week.
SCOUTING PENN
The Quakers travel to Hanover
for the first time in two seasons and currently sport a 5-3 record and are 1-1
in Ivy play, tied with Dartmouth for third in the league standings. After
starting out the season 3-0, Penn lost its next three contests before bouncing
back with wins its most recent two matchups at La Salle and at home against
Harvard. The Quakers were blanked by Cornell, 3-0, in the conference opener on
Sept. 15. Elizabeth Hitti, the current Ivy League Rookie of the Week, leads the
team in scoring with five goals and four assists for 14 points. Senior Sarah
Hasson was tabbed as the league's co-player of the week along with Dartmouth
junior Maggie Scanlon (Shaker Heights, Ohio) for her play in those two wins.
Carly Sokatch has played every minute in goal and boasts a 3.97 goals-against
average along with a save percentage of .691 and 56 saves.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
After a rough stretch against
some of the top teams in the nation to open the season, Dartmouth rattled off
three wins in a five-day span last week to even its record. Having scored just
five goals in the first five games, the Big Green offense exploded in the three
victories, scoring 17 times, including eight against Holy Cross.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For her efforts in scoring
three times and finishing with a team-high eight points, Scanlon was named the
Ivy League Co-Player of the Week. It was the first time that a Dartmouth player
earned the weekly honor since October of last season when Lisa Masini (Ann
Arbor, Mich.) was recognized. It was also the first individual accolade for
Scanlon in her collegiate career.
HATS OFF
Sophomore Janine Leger
(Johannesburg, South Africa) scored three times in the rout of the Crusaders
Sunday afternoon. After a first-half goal built the lead to 2-0, Leger scored
twice in a span of 57 seconds in the opening two minutes of the contest's final
frame to complete the hat trick, the first of her career.
FIRST 'W'
Getting the nod in goal and
playing all 70 minutes, sophomore keeper Ellen Meyer (Prospect, Ky.) picked up
her first career victory on Sunday afternoon. She was tasked with making six
saves in the game, while allowing just the one against.
LATE WINNER
In Saturday's contest with
the Bears, junior Sam Anderson (Wilton, Conn.) redirected a centering feed from
Ali Savage (Orange, New South Wales, Australia) by the Brown goalkeeper for the
game-wining goal with just 7:30 remaining. The late winner broke a 2-2 tie in
the Big Green's Ivy League home opener.
LAST TIME AGAINST PENN
These two teams played last
season at Franklin Field on the first day of October with visiting Dartmouth
coming out on top, 4-2. In the game, four different players scored for the Big
Green as they overcame a one-goal halftime deficit to notch its third league
win of the year. Savage, Masini and fellow senior Liz Blanken (Short Hills,
N.J.) each tallied markers in the contest.

The Big Green will hit the road for a Wednesday tilt (Oct. 3) at Providence
