Women's Tennis with Strong Start at Cissie Leary Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — On day two of the Cissie Leary Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth won 10 of 16 matches, following up an 8 of 12 win effort on day one. Action concludes Sunday with the final rounds.

Katherine Yau '16 reached the quarterfinal of the A Flight before falling to Yale's Hanna Yu, and Yau and Akiko Okuda '15 will play in the doubles semifinal Sunday. Sarah Bessen '16 and Julienne Keong '16 also reached the quarterfinal of the B Flight. Bessen was defeated by Cornell's Lauren Frazier 6-1, 7-5, while Keong fell to Laila Judeh of Cornell 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 in a third set super-breaker.

In A Flight back draw matches, Okuda went 2-0, as did Janet Liu '15. Suzy Tan '16 won her first B Flight back draw match, before falling to Katya Salas of the University of Richmong 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 in a third set super-breaker.

On day one, Dartmouth won 8 of 12 matches, highlighted by Big Green freshman Katherine Yau knocking off the A Flight's top seed, Penn's Sol Eskenazi, while classmates Sarah Bessen and Julienne Keong also advanced to the round of 16 in the B Flight.

Yau won her first match against Temple's Alicia Doms 6-1, 6-3 and then in the second round downed Eskenazi, the 2012 ITA Northeast Region Rookie of the Year and Ivy League Rookie of the Year, 7-5, 5-7, 14-12 in a third set super-breaker. Bessen defeated Nicole Pivonka of Drexel 6-0, 6-1, and then prevailed over Yale's Sarah Guzick 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 in a third set super-breaker. Keong received a bye and defeated Temple's Carli Bohman 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.

In other A Flight action, sophomore Janet Liu beat the University of Delaware's Dorothy Saffron 6-3, 6-0, and then lost to Richmond's Melissa Kandinata 7-5, 6-4, while classmate Akiko Okuda received a bye and then lost to Yale's Amber Li 6-3, 6-2.

In other B Flight action, freshman Suzy Tan got a bye and then lost a three-set battle to Cornell's Lauren Frazier 7-6, 4-6, 11-9 in a third set super-breaker.

In doubles, two Big Green teams are in the round of 16. Yau/Okuda defeated Bowdoin's Cheng/Albersteon 8-4, while Liu/Keong got a bye and a default. Bessen/Tan defeated Brook/Bell of Drexel 8-1, before falling to Akron's Jogasuria/Cohen 8-5.
