NEW HAVEN, CONN. — Freshman Akiko Okuda (Tenafly, N.J.) led the Big Green with two wins today as the No. 53 Dartmouth women's tennis team downed Fairleigh Dickinson, 5-2, in the fifth through eighth playoff at the ECAC Winter Championship. The Big Green's spring record now stands at 3-4 while the Knights move to 4-3.
Okuda and freshman Theresa Smith (University Park, Fla.) recorded the lone doubles win for the Big Green as Dartmouth dropped the doubles point.
The Big Green quickly rebounded in singles, led by Okuda, who again filled in at No. 1 for Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.),who is still sidelined by illness. Okuda won in straight sets, as did freshman Janet Liu (Palo Alto, Calif.) at No. 2, sophomore Sabrina Stewart (London, England) at No. 3, and senior co-captain Shelley Carpeni (New York, N.Y.) at No. 6. Junior Jeri Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) also won her match at No. 5 singles, but needed three sets to down her opponent.
Dartmouth will play Columbia University for fifth place tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
