Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the DartmouthSports.com Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Megan Krumpoch, (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Women's Track. So. Sprints
Krumpoch was a major factor in helping the Big Green to a season-opening win at the Dartmouth Relays on Sunday afternoon. The sophomore sprinter won the 400 meters in 57.94, more than a second and a half faster than the second-place finisher. After advancing through the first two qualifying heats, Krumpoch also earned points in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, running to a sixth-place finish in the finals. Late in the afternoon and in her final competition of the day, she anchored the Big Green's 4x400-meter relay team. Closing the gap between the first-place team in the final leg, Krumpoch was narrowly edged at the line as the team's 3:59.57 was just three-hundredths of a second back of UMass-Lowell's finishing time.
Gabas Maldunas earned his third Ivy League Rookie of the Week award of the season for his performance against Bucknell and 21st-ranked Harvard last week, averaging 15.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He began the week against Bucknell on Jan. 3 by registering his third double-double of the season. His 15 points and 10 rebounds led the Big Green in both categories as he knocked down a season-high seven field goals, including his first career three-pointer. He also led Dartmouth with 33 minutes on the floor while making two steals as well. On Saturday, he nearly duplicated his numbers at 21st-ranked Harvard with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds, five coming at the offensive end. He carried the Green to a six-point lead with 15 minutes to play, but the Crimson rallied to knock off Dartmouth.
