POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Dartmouth women’s volleyball team dropped its season opener, 1-3, to host Marist in the first game of the Volley in the Valley Tournament on Friday evening.  The Big Green (0-1) fell 15-25, 18-25, 25-22 and 25-18 to the Red Foxes, who improved to 2-3 with the victory.

After a slow start in the first two sets, the Green and White took their first lead of the season when they won the first three points in the third set thanks to kills by freshmen Danielle Glinka and Emily Astarita sandwiched around a service error by Marist.

The two squads battled throughout the set and with the score tied at 21 Dartmouth ran off three straight points before Astarita spiked home a kill for the win off a set from classmate Stacey Benton.

The Big Green battled in the beginning of the fourth set, pulling to within two at 12-10 thanks to a pair of kills from Astarita and junior Kaira Lujan. From that point Marist ended the set on a 13-8 run to seal the victory and their first home triumph of the season.

Astarita led the Big Green attack with 12 kills, four digs and five blocks. Paige Caridi and Molly Kornfeind each added five kills apiece for Dartmouth. Benton led the team with 29 assists and 12 digs while sophomore Kayden Cook added seven assists of her own.

As a team, Dartmouth had 43 kills, 41 assists, seven aces and 49 digs.

Dartmouth wraps up the Volley in the Valley Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7 taking on UMass Lowell at 10:00 a.m. and Hartford at 3:30 p.m.
