HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team combined for 23 hits in Ivy League doubleheader action against South Division foe, Cornell at the Dartmouth Softball Park on Friday (April 5). The Big Green won the first game, 6-2, and fell 10-9 in a 10-inning affair in the nightcap.
Game One: Dartmouth 6, Cornell 2
Dartmouth (13-15, 3-3 Ivy League) picked up its second consecutive home-opening win with a 6-2 win to open the day’s softball action.
Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) led the offense with three hits, including her first home run of the season in the sixth inning. Hubert and her teammates were on fire from the plate, as nine of the 10 players who played recorded a hit.
Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) wasn’t too shabby in the circle, bagging her 12th win of the season pitching 7.0 innings allowing just four hits, no earned runs and throwing six strikeouts.
The Big Green led from start to finish, setting the tone with a run in the first inning. Dartmouth plated three runs in the bottom of the third to pull ahead 4-0. With two outs, Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas) singled to left field followed by a single from Rumley, giving Dartmouth two base runners. Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.) kept it going and with a double, plated both Miller and Rumley. Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) sealed the inning with a double that sent Lohmann around the bases.
A two-run seventh inning, brought the Big Red within four and several errors from the Big Green shifted the momentum late in the contest, but Rumley sealed the win with a strikeout to end the ballgame.

Game Two: Cornell 10, Dartmouth 9 (10 innings)
Dartmouth’s hot bats weren’t enough in a 10-9 extra inning affair in the late game. Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) led the way with three hits, going 3-of-5 from the plate with a team-best two RBI.
The visitors took an early 3-0 lead, starting the rally with a double in the first inning. In the next at bat, a passed ball moved Emily Weinberg and a home run from Erin Belles, a line drive to right center, plated the two Big Red runners.
Dartmouth wouldn’t be discouraged and responded in the home half of the inning. Alyson Onyon walked Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) to open the inning and a groundout from Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) plated Curosh and put the Big Green on the board.
Cornell added runs in the second and third and pulled ahead, 5-3 before a big fourth inning from the home team. With one out, freshman catcher Kathy Dzienkowski (Austin, Texas) nailed a double to start the Big Green rally. Curosh doubled in the next at bat and a two-RBI Hubert single plated both runners and tied the game at 5-5.
Dartmouth added a run in the sixth and the Big Red responded with a run in the seventh to tie the game at 9-9 and sent the Big Green to their sixth extra inning contest this season.
The teams battled each other on the defensive end of things for the remainder of the contest, but the Big Red went up for good in the tenth inning, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly from Lauren Bucolo.
Five pitchers saw action for Dartmouth with Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) taking the loss, just her sixth of the season. She threw 5.2 innings of work, scattering five hits and throwing four strikeouts. Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) and Rachel Hein (Olathe, Kan.) also provided quality innings in the circle.
