Big Green Finish First Tournament of the Spring

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Dartmouth men’s golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the spring over the weekend finishing 19th of 21 teams at the Furman Intercollegiate contested at the par-72 Furman University Golf Course.

For the 54-hole event, the Big Green shot a combined aggregate score of 916 to finish 52 strokes over par. After firing a team score of 307 in the first round, the team from the Upper Valley followed with a 297 on day two and a 312 for the final 18.

Virigina Tech closed with a final round 277 to claim its fifth Furman Intercollegiate title, while North Florida, Troy, Samford and Iowa State rounded out the top five.

Scott Fernandez of Iowa State and Drew Aimone of Samford shared individual medalist honors at seven-under par.  Fernandez, the second round co-leader, held on to a share of the lead with a 72 on Sunday and Aimone climbed into the top spot with a five-under 67.

The top individual for the Big Green was James Pleat who carded a five-over par 221 over the 54-holes to finish in a tie for 28th place. Pleat opened the tournament with a one-over 73 and followed that with a two-under 70, before finishing with a six over 78.

Coming in eight shots behind Pleat was Charles Cai who shot a 13-over par 229 to come in 71st overall. Cai opened the three-day event with a six-over 78 and concluded with a 75 in round two and a 76 on the final day to move up six spots.

Charlie Edler shot a combined score of 232 to finish the tournament at +16 in a tie for 81st place. Two strokes behind Edler was Joe Maziar who carded a 234 (+18) to finish in a tie with David Cooke of Purdue in 90th. Maziar moved up on the final day, jumping four spots over the last 18.

Dylan Rusk rounded out the final for the Green and White shooting a 54-hole total of 243 (+27). Like Maziar, Rusk jumped four spots on Sunday as well.

Dartmouth returns to the links on Saturday, April 6, traveling to Connecticut for the 2013 Yale Spring Open. The 18-hole event will be contested at the par-70 Yale Golf Course.
