BOCA RATON, Fla. – It took nine innings to break a deadlock between the Dartmouth softball team and FAU but the Big Green were on the wrong end of the 2-1 game on Sunday (March 24).

With the score tied 0-0 at the end of seven innings, the Big Green and Owls went into extra innings. Dartmouth (10-10) took a 1-0  lead in the top of the eighth inning. A Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) single drove home Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.), who started on second base as international tiebreaker rules were utilized.

FAU answered the call in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own, a run on  a bunt single that set up the win in the bottom of the ninth. The Big Green had runners in scoring position in the top of the ninth and got a single from Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) but couldn’t get anyone around the bases.

FAU sealed the win with an RBI double from Laura Mann that scored Christina Martinez and gave the hosts the game. Dartmouth outhit the Owls, 7-5, and played its second extra innings game in as many days.

Curosh and McEachern led the offense. McEachern was 2-of-2 from the plate while Curosh went 2-of-4 with a double. Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.) also added a double. Rumley and Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) split time in the circle. Rumley tossed 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts while McCalmon tossed 2.1 innings.

Despite the low score, the Big Green were able to put runners on base early. After a groundout to open the game, Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) followed with a single to right field. McEachern responded with a single of her own, unfortunately, it was the last hit of the inning as both were stranded with a ground out and line out to end the inning.

Dartmouth’s defense, spearheaded by pitcher Rumley was able to keep the Owls at bay. Through five innings, FAU only reached base twice and had just two hits to six strikeouts from Rumley. Despite the Big Green’s defensive prowess, Dartmouth had trouble scoring.

The Big Green had great opportunities in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Curosh singled to center field and was moved to second on a ground out. With a McEachern walk, Dartmouth had a runner in scoring position and loaded the bases with a fielder’s choice but couldn’t find a way to send anyone home.

In the fourth inning, Lohmann doubled with one out and Rumley reached on a fielder’s choice, but Lohmann was out on the play and Katie Adams (Kent, Wash.) ended the inning with a ground out. The fifth inning also saw the Big Green place two on base with a Curosh double and McEachern walk but couldn’t get anyone around the bases.

Dartmouth will stay on the road and will take on Sacred Heard in a non-conference doubleheader in Fairfield, Conn., on Tuesday. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
