WASHINGTON, D.C. -The Dartmouth softball team opened action at the Colonial Classic with a 3-2 win over host, George Washington, on Friday (March 1) afternoon. The late game against Bucknell was called in the third inning due to darkness. The Big Green were up, 2-1, at the time the game was called.
The teams will attempt to make up the game over the course of the weekend, but a date and time have not been determined at this time.
Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) was 1-of-1 from the plate with two runs and one RBI to lead the offense. Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.), Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) and Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) also added hits.
In the circle, Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) picked up her fourth win. The sophomore fanned eight batters and only allowed two runs on four hits with one walk.
The Big Green and host Colonials were in a pitching duel in the early innings, as neither team could get their bats going. Dartmouth struck first in the top of the fourth inning which jumpstarted both teams.
Hubert belted a leadoff home run to rightfield for the second hit of the afternoon for the Big Green giving them the 1-0 advantage. Although Dartmouth took the lead, the inning ended with three consecutive groundouts.
Not to be outdone, George Washington tied the game up with a home run of its own in the home half of the inning. With one out, Victoria Valos hit a home run to centerfield to notch the game at 1-1.The hosts added a single in the next at bat, but closed the inning with a strikeout and a groundout.
The Big Green had a chance to score with two runners on base in the fifth inning. After McEachern reached on an error and advanced on the throw, Alex St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.) was walked, but Dartmouth couldn't find a way to bring anyone home leaving the runners stranded.
Dartmouth used a two-run sixth inning to regain the lead. Hubert was walked to open the inning and with a single from McCalmon the Big Green had runners in scoring position. A Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.) walk loaded the bases and a single from McEachern combined with a throwing error sent both Morgan Wharton (Binghamton, N.Y.), who pinch ran for McCalmon, and Hubert around the bases
George Washington made it interesting in the seventh inning. With one out, the Colonials placed runners on second and third and plated a run with a RBI groundout, but Rumley ended the inning with a strikeout, giving the Big Green their second consecutive win.
Dartmouth is back in action at the Colonial Classic against Seton Hall on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. The Big Green will close the day against host George Washington at 1:30 p.m.
