Dartmouth Closes Hatter Classic with 8-4 Win

DELAND, Fla. - The Dartmouth softball team closed out action at the Stetson Hatter Classic with a 8-4 win over Bethune-Cookman on Sunday (Feb. 24) afternoon. The Big Green concluded its opening weekend with a 3-2 record while Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) and Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas) earned All-Tournament team honors.

The Big Green bats were on fire as seven players tallied at least one hit in teh contest. Miller led the way going 4-of-5 with two runs, to go with two RBI. Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) and Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) split time in the circle, with Rumley picking up the win. In four innings, the sophomore allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts. McCalmon tossed three innings and had one strikeout.

Dartmouth (3-2) started the game strong. Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) got things started with a leadoff single and the Big Green quickly had a runner in scoring position after Rumley reached on a fielders choice. Miller nailed a double to load the bases and Rumley came home on a Hubert RBI.

The Wildcats answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. After striking out to open the inning, Bethune-Cookman used back-to-back singles to and loaded the bases on a Dartmouth error. A RBI single from Kelsey Rodney brought two home, and a throwing error plated a third run for the Wildcats, who pulled ahead, 3-1.

The Big Green sealed the victory with a five-run second inning. With two outs, Bethune-Cookman walked Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), which stared a rally. Conceicao stole second and came home on a RBI single down the right field line from Curosh.

Rumley followed with a single, and Miller hit a two-RBI triple before McCalmon crushed a home run over the left center wall bringing in two more runs.

Bethune-Cookman answered with a single in the third, but couldn't muster any more offense in the contest. Dartmouth tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth innings and tallied a season-high 13 hits in the victory.

The Big Green will next hit the diamond on Friday (March 1) when they take on Bucknell in the George Washington University Tournament in Washington, D.C.
