DELAND, Fla. - The Dartmouth softball team opened the 2013 campaign with a 3-2 win over Bethune-Cookman in its first game of the Stetson Hatter Classic on Friday (Feb. 22) in Florida. The Big Green dropped their second contest of the day, 7-0, to host Stetson.

"It was a great opening game," said head coach Rachel Hanson. "It was a good first day overall. Our bats came through in some key situations. We have quite a bit to work on, but a good work in progress."

In the opener, the Big Green struck first and picked up their first run of the season in the third inning. Rookie Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.), in her first collegiate at bat, belted a home run to right field to get Dartmouth on the board. That seemed to spark the Big Green as Megan Averitt (Alameda, Calif.) followed with a single to the shortstop while Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) added a single up the middle.

The Big Green's 1-0 lead held up until the top of the fifth inning when the Wildcats tied the score. After a lineout to first base, Bethune-Cookman used four straight singles to bring a runner in which tied the game.

Dartmouth (1-1) couldn't find any offense in the bottom of the inning and Bethune-Cookman was able to take advantage in the top of the sixth. A leadoff double placed a runner in scoring position and with a sacrifice bunt the Wildcats, took a 2-1 advantage.

The Big Green wouldn't be down long, as senior captain Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) opened the sixth inning with a single to right field which sparked the Big Green offense. Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) pinch ran for Hubert while pitcher Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) was walked. After a groundout, the Big Green had runners on second and third and with a double from Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas), sent two runners around the bases to take a 3-2 lead.

The Green and White stepped it up on defense in the final inning as Rumley threw two strikes to give the Big Green their third consecutive season-opening win.  For the game, Rumley threw seven strikeouts and allowed just two runs on nine hits. Several rookies had good starts to the their collegiate careers. Miller had a team-best two RBIs while McCalmon and Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) each added a hit.

In the nightcap, the Big Green couldn't get any anything across the plate. Stetson opened the game with two runs courtesy of two doubles, which set the tone for the rest of the game.

Dartmouth got its first hits of the evening in the third inning. Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.) opened the inning with a single to right field and advanced on a fielding error and Conceicao followed with a single. Although Lohmann was out at second, Curosh nailed a single to center field before the inning ended with a groundout.

The Big Green were able to tack on another hit in the fourth inning with a single from Rumley, but couldn't get anyone around the bases. The Hatters added runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-0 lead, which would hold.

Rookie McCalmon saw her first action in the circle, pitching three innings and throwing three strikeouts, while allowing three runs on four hits. Rachel Hein (Olathe, Kan.) also saw some time in the circle tossing 0.1 inning of work with one strikeout. Rumley pitched the final 2.2 innings.  Lohmann led the offense in the second game with a team-best two hits.

The Big Green are back on the diamond on Saturday at the Hatter Classic when they face Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M. First pitch is at 11 a.m. against Bethune-Cookman and the day concludes at 1:30 p.m. against the Rattlers.
