BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo volleyball team took it the distance Friday night, defeating Dartmouth in five sets to open play at the Blue and White Classic.  After falling in the first two sets in the match, the Big Green bounced back to win the next two, but couldn't hold on in the fifth. With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 1-6 on the season, while the Bulls (4-6) snap a five-match losing skid.

The Bulls took the contest 25-23, 27-25, 20-25, 20-25, 15-11 as they outhit Dartmouth, .200 to .160.

After falling behind two sets to none, Dartmouth came back with a pair of 25-20 victories in the third and fourth sets to send the match to a tiebreaker.

But Buffalo would not be denied at home, and the Bulls raced out to a 7-2 lead in the fifth, forcing the Big Green to call both of their timeouts. Buffalo continued to lead by five at 14-9 before Dartmouth scored two straight points to pull within three.  Following a UB timeout, the Bulls stunned the Big Green with a heartbreaking match point.

Three Dartmouth players — Alex Schoenberger, Elisa Scudder and Paige Caridi— reached double-figures in kills for the match. Four from the Big Green earned 10 or more digs on the night, including Lucia Pohlman and Holly Harper, who had 16 apiece, along with Kayden Cook and Caridi, who recorded her second straight double-double of the season. Cook led all players with 43 assists.

Meghan Lipski (18 kills, 11 digs) and Liz Scott (18 kills, 10 digs) led the Bulls with a double-double apiece. Kelly Svoboda earned 26 digs in Buffalo's narrow victory.  

Day two of the Blue and White Classic kicks off tomorrow, with Dartmouth facing Syracuse at 2:30 p.m. and Hartford at 5:00 p.m.
