COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Five first-half goals from No. 3 Maryland were enough to pick up the victory against the visiting Dartmouth field hockey team Sunday afternoon as part of the 2012 Terrapin Invitational.

A second-half tally from the defending national champions sealed the win, 6-0, and improved the Terps' record to 5-1 overall. The Big Green falls to 1-3 on the season with their second loss of the weekend.

One of the more gifted offensive teams in the country, Maryland wasted little time in getting on the board, scoring 1:25 into the game on an Ali McEvoy shot resulting from a penalty corner. In all, the Terrapins scored on four corners in the first half.

McEvoy scored the final goal of the afternoon on a penalty stroke exactly 53 minutes into the contest to make it 6-0.

Dartmouth's defense was under attack all day as Maryland had 17 total shots in both halves and finished the game with 23 shots on goal.

Getting her first collegiate start in goal, sophomore Ellen Meyer (Prospect, Md.) allowed five goals, while making a career-best nine saves in just her 35 minutes of action. Senior Jenna Stearns (Thornton, N.H.) came in for the second half of action, making eight stops and allowing just the penalty stroke goal to McEvoy.

The Big Green's offense was held in check as well as a shot from sophomore Ali Savage (Orange, New South Wales, Australia) in the first half was the only one that made its way on goal that starting keeper Natalie Hunter had to turn aside in her 35 minutes for the home team.

The start of the game was delayed nearly an hour as the contest between UMass and American beforehand went into double overtime, pushing back the opening whistle by 55 minutes.

Dartmouth's three-game road swing doesn't get any easier as it heads to Princeton next Saturday for its Ivy League opener against the No. 4 Tigers. Game time is set for noon.
