HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth softball team swept the Yale Bulldogs in doubleheader action at the Dartmouth Softball Park on Sunday (April 22). The Big Green won the first game, 8-0, in six innings and took the doubleheader with a 8-4 win in the late game.
"It was good for us to rebound and get two wins after yesterday's games, " said head coach Rachel Hanson. "It gives us some confidence heading into next week's games against Boston College and Harvard."
Third baseman Britta McOmber (Bothell, Wash.) was on a tear, going 5-of-6 from the plate with three RBIs on the afternoon while scoring three runs. McOmber moved into the starting lineup at third base after playing well in yesterday's game.
Freshman pitcher Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) was also impressive from the plate, going 3-of-3 with one RBI. Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) was also impressive in the circle, posting a no-hitter through the fifth inning in the second game.
Dartmouth (12-21, 5-11 Ivy) set the tone early in the first game, scoring four runs in the first inning. With one out, McOmber nailed a home run over the left field wall, to put the Big Green up early. Dartmouth placed two baserunners after a walk and a single and with a Yale error pushed across three more runs to take a 4-0 lead after one inning of play.
The Big Green added a run in the second and third innings and sealed the game with two runs in the sixth. McOmber singled in the first at bat of the inning and after a flyout, first baseman Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) used a double t send her home and a Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) triple sealed the victory sending Hicks around the bases.
Freshman Rhiannon Saucedo (Las Cruces, N.M.) was impressive in the first game going 2-of-3 with two RBI. McOmber was the story, going 4-of-4 with two RBI and scoring two runs. Lefty Rumley fanned 10 batters, three shy of the single game record and allowed just two hits in six innings of work.
The Big Green managed to keep Yale (10-30, 3-13 Ivy League) off balance to open the second game. Both teams were scoreless through the first inning before the Big Green got on the board first. Everett reached on an error from the Yale second baseman and after a single from Katie Adams (Kent, Wash.), the Big Green placed a runner on third. Everett came home on a single from Jonele Conceiaco (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) to put the Big Green up early.
Yale couldn't get any offense going with nine consecutive groundouts to start the game and Dartmouth was able to capitalize on the Bulldogs stagnant offense.
The Big Green posted six runs on five hits in the third inning to pull ahead 7-0. Dartmouth loaded the bases twice in the inning and was able to send everyone around the bases each time. Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) nailed a two-run double that opened the game up. Dartmouth added another run in the fifth to take a 8-0 lead.
The Bulldog's second baseman Jennifer Ong finally broke through with a single in the sixth inning, giving Yale their first hit of the afternoon. Yale picked up a run in the fourth inning but would only get as close as 8-4.
In 7.0 innings of work Barker allowed four runs on four hits with two strikeouts. From the plate, Baker added two hits and a run. Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) was 2-of-4 with a RBI while Ramirez added two RBI.
Dartmouth continues its six-game homestand when it welcomes non-conference foe, Boston College to the Dartmouth Softball Park for a twinbill on Wednesday (April 25). Wednesday's game will be a "Strikeout Cancer" game with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
