CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Dartmouth softball team closed its trip at the South Florida Invitational with losses to North Florida and Florida A&M. The Big Green closed the tournament with a 3-3 record with wins over Kent State, Iona and Hartford.
The Big Green bats were pretty silent against the Osprey's, but it was the Big Green that got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan, Beach, Calif.) gave Dartmouth a base runner after being walked in the second at bat of the inning. Leadoff hitter Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) utilized a single down the left field line to move Conceicao, who then advanced on a throwing error by the catcher.
Conceicao looked like she might round the bases in the next at bat, but was gunned down at home plate on a throw from the Osprey's second baseman. Not to fear, Curosh rounded the bases with an RBI single from centerfielder, Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.).
North Florida had a big inning in the bottom of the third that set the tone for the rest of the game. The Osprey's tacked on five runs. The inning opened with a walk followed by back-to-back singles. North Florida's Reese hit a two RBI single that brought both base runners home. The Osprey's added on three more runs before the inning was over to take a 5-1 lead.
Dartmouth threatened in the fifth inning. Alex St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.) opened the inning with a single to left field and Conceicao reached on an error from the third baseman. The bases were loaded when Curosh was walked but that was as close as the Big Green would get as the inning ended with St. Romain being picked off at home while there was a strikeout and groundout to close the inning.
North Florida added four more runs to end the game at the bottom of the sixth inning. Curosh and St. Romain went 1-of-2 from the plate while Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) pitched five innings and fanned six batters. Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) came in, in the sixth inning and faced four batters and allowed two runs.
In the late game, Dartmouth didn't fare much better on either side of the ball. The Big Green dropped a 2-1 contest to Florida A&M and were playing catch up the majority of the game.
The Rattlers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a Big Green error to open the inning. Kieifi Myrick scored on a groundout to give Florida A&M the early 1-0 advantage. Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) started off the third inning with a single to the shortstop but the Big Green couldn't get anything going to send her home, leaving her stranded at the end of the inning.
Florida A&M added the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With a leadoff single to centerfield and two outs, the Rattlers used a single and an error to send Gainer around the bases.
Dartmouth had a little bit of a rally in the seventh inning. Kat Hicks (Templeton, Fla.) hit a leadoff center and Katie Adams (Kent, Wash.) added a bunt in the next at bat to give the Big Green two base runners. Unfortunately, the inning ended with a Rattler double play.
Britta McOmber (Bothell, Wash.) was 1-of-1 from the plate with a run scored while four other teammates added hits. Rumley and Barker both saw time in the circle. Rumley threw 4.2 innings of work with two strikeouts while Barker saw 1.2 innings in relief with four strikeouts.
The Big Green will stay in the Sunshine State and will take on Stetson in doubleheader action on Wednesday (March 21). Dartmouth will also take on North Texas and Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday (March 22) before returning to the Northeast.
