HANOVER, N.H. — Ethan Maenza ran five times for 70 yards with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion, Dakari Falconer carried six times for 46 yards, one TD and a two-point conversion, and Derek Kyler completed four-of-six passes for 91 yards and a touchdown as the Dartmouth junior varsity overwhelmed the Division III Norwich University (Vt.) jayvees Sunday on Memorial Field, 36-8.
The Big Green’s domination was complete with the shortest gain on a running play through the first nine plays going for nine yards while the Cadets lost yardage on six of their first seven carries, with the longest gain going just for one yard.
Dartmouth thwarted the first two Norwich drives with interceptions, the first when Niko Mermigas tipped a ball in the air and then laid out for the interception, and the second when Jayden Minchew stepped in front of a pass at his own 49 and returned it 40 yards to the 11. Maenza made short work of the ensuing drive by going in over the left side for the touchdown on the first play and adding the two-point conversion.
It was Maenza who got the day started for the Dartmouth offense with runs of 28 and 18 yards on the first two plays from scrimmage before quarterback Jimmy Fitzgerald faked a handoff and ran right for 24 yards and the touchdown. He also ran for the two-point conversion.
Dartmouth made it 14-0 on its second possession as Kyler took a big hit while rolling left, somehow stayed on his feet and found Scott Lloyd in the left corner of the end zone from 20 yards out. The two-point pass was batted down.
After Maenza’s TD it was Falconer reeling off consecutive runs of 12, 11 and 13 yards with a Cole Douglas 24-yard completion to Kamana Hobbs mixed in before Falconer strolled in from the 1 behind a push that knocked the Norwich line halfway into the end zone. Falconer added the two-point run.
Dartmouth’s final points came after Kyler hit Lloyd for 51 yards down the middle on first down and Hobbs for 20 on second. Maenza ran in from the four to close out the scoring. A fumble on the two-point conversion saw a Norwich running headed the other way before Hobbs ran him down.
The Big Green’s defense started just as fast as the offense as Arthur Kaslow put Norwich in an immediate hole with a six-yard sack on the second play of the opening series and interceptions stopped the Cadets’ next two bids. Norwich recorded just one first down not via penalty until its final drive of the two-quarter game. The Cadets’ only points came on a drive kept alive by a Dartmouth pass interference penalty and a Big Green person foul. Their 32-yard TD pass seemed to be a third interception in as many possessions only to see the receiver somehow come away with the ball in the corner of the end zone.
In addition to an interceptions, Mermigas had four tackles including a sack and a tackle for loss. Jordan McGriff had four stops including a sack and Colton Forster made four tackles. Tommy Ciesla had three stops including a sack while Minchew had two tackles (one for a loss) and an interception. Caleb Martin also had two stops.
