WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 6 Dartmouth heavyweight rowing team placed eighth out of 18 teams at the 2017 Eastern Sprints Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday.
Highlighting the day was the Big Green's fifth-place finish in the varsity eight with their time of 5:38.78. This was their highest finish in the event since 2010.
In the second heat of the fourth varsity, Dartmouth placed third (5:54.73) and finished a tenth of a second ahead of Cornell in fourth (5:54.87). In the Grand Final, the Big Green were sixth with a time of 5:58.65.
Just two seconds separated the first four teams in heat two of the second varsity, being led by Harvard (5:40.21) and Cornell (5:41.11). Dartmouth followed in third (5:42.53), leaving two-tenths of a second between it and Wisconsin (5:42.77). Later that day in the Petite Final, the Big Green took sixth (5:49.21), crossing the line half a second behind the Lions in 5:48.77.
In the first heat of the third varsity, Dartmouth took third (5:51.67), edging Syracuse by over a second (5:52.83) and advancing to the Petite Final. In their second go-through of the day, the Big Green raced an almost identical time of 5:51.12, finishing over five seconds ahead of George Washington in sixth (5:56.46).
Dartmouth finished half a second behind first-place Princeton in heat three of the first varsity with its time of 5:36.43, advancing to the Grand Final for the second time that afternoon. Less than 10 seconds separated all six boats in the GF. The Big Green were fifth (5:38.78), leaving two seconds between them and Brown in sixth (5:40.63).
Next up for Dartmouth will be the IRA Regatta, which will take place in Folsom, California, from June 2-4.
