KENNESAW, Ga. – The Dartmouth softball team fell to Akron in the final day of the Dr. Bobbie Bailey Memorial Tournament on Sunday morning.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 0-8-1, while the Zips improve to 8-9.
Dartmouth sent Breanna Ethridge to the circle for the Big Green’s final appearance in the tournament. The Loganville, Georgia native hurled six innings with seven strikeouts and allowed just two walks.
Akron jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first when Ashley Sims scored on a fielder’s choice after she led off the inning with a bunt-single. A scoreless second gave way to the third when the Zips added to their lead. With two outs, Taylor Kirian homered to left field, putting Akron up 2-0 through three.
In the fourth, Dartmouth tried to get those runs back when Maddie Damore smacked a double to center with one out, but the Big Green could not bring her home. Akron added to its advantage in the bottom of the fifth when Cassie Gillespie hit a two-out single to left field and scored when Kirian reached on a fielding error.
The Big Green put Damore in scoring position in the sixth when she doubled to right center and advanced to third on a fielding error, but Claire Bird grounded out to end the inning. In the top of the seventh, the Zips retired the side to end the game, as Akron’s Lexie Handley pitched a complete game with three strikeouts and no runs.
Dartmouth will have a week off before the Big Green return to action on March 17 for the LMU Tournament in Los Angles, California.
