TAMPA, Fla. - The Big Green battled back after falling behind early but fell to Rutgers 6-5 on Wednesday (March 20). Dartmouth’s scheduled game against USF was cancelled due to rain.

Pitcher Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) led the team from the plate and in the circle. She went 2-of-4 from the plate and with two runs. In the circle, she tossed 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts and just one walk.  Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas), Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) and Alex St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.) each added runs in the contest.

Rutgers got on the scoreboard early putting two runs on the board in the first inning. With two outs, Jackie Bates singled to short and Alexis Durando followed with a two-run home run to open the scoring and give the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 lead.

Dartmouth (8-6), had a base runner after a leadoff walk from Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.), got a hit in the bottom of the inning from Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.), who singled down the right field line.  The two runners were stranded as the Big Green lined out and ground out to end the inning.

The Big Green shut down Rutgers in the second and tacked on a run of their own. Rumley opened with a leadoff single followed by a hit by pitch and a walk that loaded the bases with no outs. Rumley scored on a sacrifice fly from Katie Adams (Kent, Wash.), which kept the bases loaded and got Dartmouth on the board.

The teams traded runs in the fifth inning with both teams earning two runs in their respective halves of the inning, which gave the Scarlet Knights a 6-5 lead, which would hold for the rest of the game.

The Big Green will continue spring break action on Thursday (March 21) when they take on Florida Gulf Coast. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Florida Gulf Coast Softball Complex.
