Colgate Storms Back to Hand Dartmouth First Loss, 5-4
Robbie Boudon capped off his hat trick effort with three seconds left in the third period to take the win from the grasp of the Big Green looking to continue its best start in more than 50 years.
Boudon made a diving play that pushed the puck through a crowd and into the net for the winner.
Leading 4-1 after Eric Robinson's team-leading eighth goal of the season 1:11 into the final frame, the Raiders (5-6-1, 1-3-1 ECAC Hockey) stormed back to net the final four tallies of the night.
The Big Green came into the contest as the lone unbeaten team in the country at 5-0-1, but the loss drops them to 4-1-0 in league play and was the first blemish of 2012-13.
A wild second period saw the Big Green jump out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Dustin Walsh, Brad Schierhorn and Tyler Sikura in a 2:14 span late in the frame. It was Walsh's first tally since New Year's Eve 2011 when he found the back of the net against St. Lawrence in the Ledyard Classic.
Robinson's goal continued his trend of scoring at least once in each game this season, but that seemed to wake the Raiders from a rough stretch of play. The fourth Big Green goal chased starter Eric Mihalik from the Colgate net, but the Raiders responded with Spencer Finney in net.
Bourdon was strong in the final two periods, scoring three times to erase the three-goal third-period deficit.
Cab Morris made 26 saves in being saddled with his first loss of the season (3-1-1). Mihalik stopped 22 shots in just over two periods, while Finney made just three as the team in front of him pushed for the offensive explosion to earn the win.
Dartmouth's penalty kill was 2-for-2 on the night, while 1-for-5 on the power play.
Last year, Colgate led 4-1 in the third at Starr Rink before the Big Green stormed back for a 5-4 overtime win.
Dartmouth will now head to Ithaca to play No. 10 Cornell Saturday night at 7 p.m.
