SMITHFIELD, R.I -Sophomore Kamala Thompson (Selden, N.Y.) posted a career and game-high 17 points while sophomore Abbey Schmitt (Winnetka, Ill.) added a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds as the Dartmouth women's basketball team rolled to a 64-53 win over Bryant in its season-opener on Saturday (Nov. 10).

Dartmouth (1-0), who led throughout, picked up its first season-opening win since 2009-10 against the very same Bryant Bulldogs.

Despite the victory, the second half could be characterized as a boxing match with each team making punches and counter punches.  Bryant (0-1) struck first out of the halftime break using a 9-5 run to get the Dartmouth lead down to just one point at the 15:18 mark.

The Big Green utilized a triple from Nicola Zimmer (Chevy Chase, Md.) pushing the lead back to five points at the 12:56 mark. Although Dartmouth never relinquished the lead, Bryant kept the score within two possessions until the 7:11 mark when the momentum shifted.

A 10-0 run, sparked by a pair from sophomore center Tia Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and a triple from guard Milica Toskovic (Santa Monica, Calif.) pushed the lead to 12 points and from there the Big Green coasted to the win.

After some sloppy play from both teams to open the game, Dartmouth fueled by triples from Zimmer and Thompson was able to take the early momentum and pulled ahead, 10-2, utilizing a 6-2 run at the first media timeout.

Thompson fueled the offense in the first half. Starting her first game since midway through the Ivy League slate last season, Thompson led the squad with 11 points in the first half but the play of forward Schmitt opened the floor for the Big Green.

Schmitt's moved under the basket allowed for some impressive inside-outside play and helped Dartmouth utilize a 13-4 run to pull ahead 16-4 for its largest lead of the half.

Bryant was able to cut into the Big Green's lead midway through the half using a three-point play from Danielle Douglass to get the Big Green lead down to four points with 2:44 remaining.

The Bulldogs looked as if they might seize the momentum heading into halftime after a triple from Tiersa Winder cut the Big Green lead to two-points with less than a minute remaining in the half.

That minute was all Dartmouth needed as Nicola Zimmer (Chevy Chase, Md.) drilled a pair from the charity stripe and Daisy Jordan (Worcester, Mass.) closed the half with a buzzer beater from the right wing, to keep Dartmouth ahead, 30-24.

Dartmouth opens the 2012-13 home slate on Tuesday (Nov. 13) when they welcome 2011 WAC Champion, BYU, to Leede Arena. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. and is the first of a doubleheader with the Big Green men's team who take on New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
