Prior to Dartmouth: Bessen is ranked No. 1 in the USTA/Intermountain section, No. 1 in Nevada, and was named the 2012 Nevada Player of the Year. She has also has won two national doubles titles, and won the Intermountain Sportsmanship Award and Scholar-Athlete Award in 2010. She played three years of high school tennis and led Bishop Gorman to the state title each of those three years. Bessen also won the state high school doubles title her freshman year and was named rookie of the year. Additionally, she was named most valuable player twice. Her twin brother Michael is also going to be a member of Dartmouth's Class of 2016. Bessen trains at the Desert Palm Tennis Club in Las Vegas with Zdenek Cernoch.
