HANOVER, N.H. — Junior co-captain Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.) won at No. 1 singles but the No. 56 Dartmouth women’s tennis lost 6-1 to the undefeated Akron on Friday at the Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion. Dartmouth fell to 3-6, while the Zips moved to 12-0 after recent wins over Kentucky and Louisville.

The Big Green dropped the doubles point 3-0, with Leonard and classmate Jeri Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) coming the closest to a victory with a 9-7 loss at No. 3.

A hard-hitting team comprised entirely of international players, Akron jumped out to an early lead in singles with straight-set wins at No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6. Leonard put Dartmouth on the board by winning in a third set super-breaker over Zara Harutyunyan, a three-time Mid-American Conference Player of the Year who three days ago bested Kentucky’s top player.

Freshmen Akiko Okuda (Tenafly, N.J.) and Theresa Smith (University Park, Fla.) also had close matches at the second and fourth spots. Okuda lost, 7-6, 6-3, to freshman Olga Shkundina, while Smith, playing her first singles match this winter, was edged in a third-set super-breaker.

Dartmouth returns to action at home versus UMass on Wednesday, February 29, at 5 p.m.
