ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 10 ranked Dartmouth men's squash team journeyed down to Annapolis to play No. 14 United States Naval Academy for its first match of the season. With three, hard-fought, five-game wins, the Big Green was able to cruise past the Midshipmen, 7-2.
The first round of matches started off with a loss from freshman Toby Harding, in a tight three games. After losing the first game 11-8, sophomore Brandon de Otaduy rallied to win the following games 13-11, 12-10, 11-4 for 3-1 victory. Sophomore Drew Monroe won the first game 11-4, dropped the following two games, and then came back to win the match 3-2. Monroe's victory put the Big Green up 2-1.
In the second round of matches, junior Sam Epley won a close first game 15-13 and then won the next two games in triumphat fashion, for a 3-0 win. Junior Carson Spahr won the first game 11-7 but ultimately fell in four games. Freshman James Bell went up 2-0 before his opponent won the next two games to tie the match 2-2. Bell, however, regained his composure and won the last game 15-13, giving the Dartmouth a 4-2.
In the third round of matches, freshman Reg Anderson clinched the fifth victory for Dartmouth with a flashy, five-game win. Even though the Big Gren had sealed the match, Dartmouth's last two players, senior captain Alvin Heumann and junior Matt Giegerich, kept pushing onwards. Heumann won in a solid three games, including a close, 17-15, win in the second. Giegerich, meanwhile, tied his opponent 1-1, before pulling ahead to win the final two games 13-11, 12-10. This third-round sweep locked up a 7-2 victory.
Dartmouth continues its weekend action against George Washington this afternoon.
