John Simons joined the Big Green staff in the fall of 2017 to work with the Dartmouth’s mid-distance athletes.

Before coaching at Dartmouth, Simons was a four-time All-American at the University of Minnesota and earned the Fred O. Watson MVP Award for Cross Country.  In 2013, he broke four minutes in the mile and the following year went on to claim the Big Ten Champion title in the indoor mile run. That same year he also qualified for the USA Outdoor Championships in the 1500m. Simons also served as the captain of the cross country team and led Minnesota to its first-ever Griak Invitational Team Title in 2012.

After graduating from Minnesota with a degree in business marketing and education in the spring of 2014, Simons athletic career propelled him into professional running for Zap-Fitness-Reebok. As a professional track athlete for this club, he competed in several professional competitions and recruited new athletes for the program.

In August of 2016, Simons retired from his professional career to coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he served as the assistant coach for cross country and track and field distance athletes, overseeing the men’s training and racing programs. In his tenure, he led 13 athletes to lifetime bests in their respective events in their indoor and outdoor seasons. Within one season he helped the men’s distance team improve 20 points in the outdoor championship, setting a new school record (35).

As an assistant coach, Simons also was involved in the recruiting process and helped Milwaukee sign Noah Tagliapietra, the fastest distance recruit in program history. Simons also concluded his tenure at Milwaukee by earning his USTFCCCA Endurance Specialist Certification in the summer of 2017.
