Dartmouth sailing head coach Justin Assad has appointed David Thompson an assistant coach for the 2014-15 season. Thompson previously was the head coach of the Vermont sailing team.

“We are excited to welcome David to Dartmouth,” said Assad.  “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program, and was able to make tremendous strides at Vermont.”

In Burlington, Thompson coached the 2014 NEISA Coed second team crew, the 2012 NEISA Women’s first team and coached a sailor for the Singleheaded Nationals in 2012 and 2013.

Thompson began his coaching career during his undergraduate summers as the head race coach at White Bear Lake Sailing School in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. After graduating Hobart in 2011, Thompson spent the next year as a part-time coach for the Statesmen. For the last four years, he’s worked at the Edgartown Yacht Club working as a 420 coach, race program manager and junior program manager.

A highly regarded skipper and an up-and-coming coach in the sailing community, Thompson was a four-year letterwinner for the Statesman and was named a 2010-11 ICSA All-American Skipper. Upon arriving in Geneva, New York, Thompson was named the Hobart Sailing Rookie of the Year in 2008, the Hobart Sailing Class of 1994 Award winner for outstanding commitment and dedication to the welfare of the team as a sophomore and the team MVP as a senior.

Thompson is a national competitor in the collegiate 420/FJ, Vanguard 15, A-Scow, E-Scow and Laser Radial.
